Final Committee Appointments

Below are the department committee assignments for academic year 2008-2009. I thank you in advance for participating in these important departmental responsibilities and in your dedication and commitment to university service.

Advisory Committee

This committee is elected by the faculty to advise the Head on matters of substance, policy and procedure and to carry out such additional duties and responsibilities as specified in the By-Laws and University Statutes.

Executive Committee (Elected by Faculty)

Tenured Faculty Committee

This committee consists of all active faculty members appointed on indefinite tenure. Its responsibilities are normally to advise the Head in matters concerning the evaluation and promotion and/or tenure of persons holding the ranks of Lecturer, Instructor or Assistant Professor.

Professorial Committee

 This committee consists of all active faculty members holding the rank of Full Professor and the Department Head as Chair. Its responsibilities are normally to advise the Head in matters concerning the evaluation and promotion of members of the faculty holding the rank of Associate Professor.

Admissions Committee

This committee is responsible for selecting new graduate students for admission and for making recommendations regarding financial aid packets for new students.

Financial Aid Committee

This committee is responsible for making recommendations regarding financial aid packets for all continuing students, as well as reviewing and ranking student aid requests and proposals to the Graduate College and department. The Chair of this committee will coordinate with the Chair of the Admissions Committee regarding financial aid packets for new students.

Course Scheduling Committee

This committee is responsible for scheduling days and times of all undergraduate and graduate courses for the department.  In the Fall, the Course Scheduling Committee must complete this by October 30th. In the Spring, the course scheduling Committee must complete this by April 20st.

Affirmative Action Officer

Responsibility to review hiring and promotion of academic personnel in terms of Departmental and University Equal Opportunity guidelines. Appointed person maintains liaison with relevant University and College committees and gathers information relevant to hiring and recruitment especially of minorities and women.

Diversity Committee

This committee is responsible for encouraging intellectual community, and organizing workshops, reading groups, speakers, and other departmental activities centered on issues of diversity

Anthropology and History

This committee collaborates with a similar committee in History to organize joint activities.

Awards Committee

This committee is responsible for administration of departmental awards for teaching. In addition, special awards for student competitions such as the O’Brien Award and the D.B. Shimkin Award are handled by this committee.

Brown Bag Coordinators

Brown Bag talks are scheduled by graduate student coordinators and should be handled through GASA this year.

Capricious Grading Committee

According to regulations enacted by the Senate, the faculty of each Department elects a Capricious Grading Committee from among its own members. The committee hears cases of alleged capricious grading in accordance with procedures established by the Senate and published annually in the booklet or web, Code on Campus Affairs and Regulations Applying to All Students.

Committee on Colloquia and Intellectual Community

Responsible for approving requests from other departments for anthropology support. Also responsible for organizing events involving visiting anthropologists on campus. A budget of $4,000.00 is available for the calendar year 2008-2009

Committee on Computing Facilities and Programs

Responsible for assessing  software and hardware needs for the computer lab, identify funding options for updating and maintaining equipment, recommending operating policy for the computer room, and generally acting as a resource and oversight committee for the computer lab.

Courses and Curricula Committee

Responsible for reviewing curricula, making recommendations to the department for changes in curricula and assisting faculty in the course development process.

Development Committee

Responsibility for text of the alumni newsletter and for working with the LAS Development office on priorities for funding raising and Distinguished Alumni Awards. Also responsible for assisting in planning of spring banquet as needed .

Graduate Grievance Committee

This committee of three faculty members and three graduate students, elected by GASA, hears and advises on individual graduate student grievances according to procedures specified in the Departmental By-Laws and associated policies. Students may initiate inquiries regarding a grievance with any member of the committee.

Laboratory of Anthropology Collections Management and Advisory Committee

This committee is responsible for advising the Acting Director of the LOA and the Department Head with regard to general laboratory issues.  A subcommittee of two members Tim Pauketat and Tom Emerson are specifically appointed to assist with issues of North American Archaeology collections management.

Osteology Collections Committee

This committee is charged to review the osteological collections, advise the Head with respect to NAGPRA issues, and develop procedures for the maintenance and enhancement of the current collections. Strategies for replacement of teaching materials should this become necessary should also be considered. Faculty with appropriate experience may be appointed to this committee on an ad hoc basis as needed for NAGPRA consultations.

Research Program and Summer Funding

Responsibility for assigning grants to graduate students from Departmental funds for summer pre-dissertation research

Human Subjects Review

This committee is designed to serve as a clearing house of information for students and faculty to aid in understanding the requirements of human subjects research. Committee members serve as a liason with the  Research Board concerning human subjects research
