Ida King Stevens Award
The Ida King Stevens Award is intended to help returning women students complete their education. The scholarship awards $1000 ($500 each semester) toward tuition and fees.
The Recipient Must be female, a resident of the state of illinois, have experienced an interruption in formal education of at least 2 years, be enrolled as an undergraduate program at UIUC either full-time or part-time, demonstrate need (as determined by FAFSA), and have a minimum 2.5 gpa.

Charles J. Bareis Award in North American Archaeology
Faculty nominations are being accepted for the Charles J. Bareis Award given for outstanding accomplishments and achievements in North American Archaeology. Priority is given to students working on questions, materials, and sites that relate to the archaeology of Illinois to support undergraduate research and career development. Applications must include a resume, a faculty letter of support and a 1-2 page description of the significance of the research for the student's intellectual development and our understanding of North American and/or Illinois archaeology.

Patricia O'Brien Award in Anthropology
The Patricia O'Brien Award will be presented this spring to the student who submits a superior undergraduate anthropology paper. Any undergraduate anthropology major or minor may enter. The award this year includes a prize of $250 to the winner.
The papers will be judged on the basis of excellence as demonstrated by clear focus, development of ideas, synthesis of literature covered, writing style, originality, and contribution to the field. Papers will be judged by the O'Brien Committee made up representatives of the four sub-disciplines. At the committee's discretion, an outside reviewer may be asked to assist in the evaluation of a particular entry.
Papers must be submitted no later than 3:00pm Friday, March 29, 2013. Papers must be submitted electronically to Karla Harmon at kharmon@illinois.eduThe papers must be cleanly typed, and the format should be as appropriate for professional journals such as American Anthropologist, American Antiquity, or American Journal of Physical Anthropology. The paper must be anthropological in subject matter and approach. Senior honor theses, course research papers, fieldwork analyses, and independent projects are all acceptable entries. The paper must have been written or substantially developed while the student has been at the University of Illinois.
The award will be presented to the winner at the Anthropology Spring Banquet. The O'Brien Award Committee will announce the winner to the department just prior to this event. The department will display the winner's name on the Patricia O'Brien Award plaque in Room 110 Davenport Hall. The recipient will also receive a formal letter of acknowledgment from the head of the Department.

Demitri B. Shimkin Award
We are pleased to announce the Demitri B. Shimkin Award, to be presented this spring to a graduate student who submits a superior paper in the discipline of anthropology. Any anthropology graduate student may enter. The award is a winning prize of $1000.00.
The papers will be evaluated in terms of their problem orientation, logical development, research breadth, originality, and contribution to the field. Papers will be judged by faculty members of the Awards Committee. At the committee's discretion, an outside reviewer may be asked to assist in the evaluation of a particular entry.
Papers must be submitted no later than Monday, March 25, 2013. I will accept papers in electronic version only to kharmon@illinois.edu . The papers must be cleanly typed, and the format should follow American Anthropologist, American Antiquity, or American Journal of Physical Anthropology style guidelines. The paper must be anthropological in subject matter and approach. Research papers, fieldwork analyses, independent projects, and master's papers are all acceptable entries. The paper text must have been written or substantially developed while the student has been at the University of Illinois. It must not exceed 35 pages (12pt. double-spaced) in length including texts, notes, bib. all double spaced to be considered (excluding tables and graphs and illustrations). Co-authored (faculty-student) papers and published papers will not be accepted. However, papers currently under review for publication will be considered.
The Awards Committee will announce the winner this spring. The department will display the winner’s name on an Award plaque in room 110 Davenport Hall. The recipient will also receive a formal letter of acknowledgment from the Head of the Department.
