Biography
George W. Calfas, is a Doctoral candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds an MA in Anthropology and is a member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists. As an archaeologist, Calfas’ research focuses on aspects of African diaspora cultures and history, and the development of stoneware ceramic traditions by African-American and European American craftspeople. He is a historic archaeologist and is collaborating on a multi-year and interdisciplinary collaboration to research the history and development of the pottery communities of Edgefield. Calfas is currently involved in the ongoing archaeological research, community outreach, and civic engagement projects at the National Historic Landmark of New Philadelphia, Illinois and the National Register site of Pottersville, South Carolina.
