Department Awards

Anthropology Distinguished Service Award

Initiated by the head of the department for outstanding service through a commitment to Teamwork and Leadership. The award is given with a commemorative dollar amount and a plaque.

Charles J. Bareis

George A. Beslow

Given to a Graduate Student as a fellowship in Anthropology and Sociology. This Award is given every other year and shared between Anthropology and Sociology. This award is selected by the committee of Admissions and Financial Aid. The amount of this award varies from $5,000-$7000.

Edward M. Bruner

Given to a Graduate Student for Academic Excellence and Promise in Anthropology. This award is selected by the committee of Admissions and Financial Aid. The amount of this award is $500.

Campus Undergraduate Teaching Award

(formerly Luckman, '96; UIUC Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in Anthropology '95 and prior)

This award is selected by the undergraduates. Faculty and Teaching Assistants are nominated by ballot for their outstanding teaching in a particular course. The undergraduates who nominate can only vote for a particular instructor from a previous semester, not the one that they are currently enrolled. Usually a certificate is awarded to the winners.  The department forwards nominations including any supporting letters to the Campus Undergraduate Teaching Award committee.

Joseph Casagrande

This award is given to a Graduate Student for Anthropology Research. This award is selected by the committee of Admissions and Financial Aid. The amount of the award is $500.

Graduate College Outstanding Mentor Award

This award recognizes exemplary efforts of members of the graduate faculty in advising and serving graduate students.  In addition to the honorarium, this is also the first year the Graduate College has been able to accompany this award with a $6000 fellowship for the following year.

UIUC Graduate Student Symposium Presentation

Honors Research Proposal (Thesis Writing)

Awarded to students enrolled in either 291 or 293 for undergraduate research expenses. Interested students must submit a proposal to the undergraduate advisor.

Mentor Recognition

Graduate students recognize a Faculty member or Research Associate who has been a mentor in their studies here in the department.The Committee consists of graduate students of GASA.

Patricia O'Brien

This award is given to a Department of Anthropology undergraduate. A paper is submitted on something of anthropological significance. The Committee consists of a faculty member from each subfield. The amount of this award is $500.

Helen Corley Petit

The late Mrs. Helen Corley Petit, an alumna of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, provided an endowment for the development of the scholarship and teaching of young faculty members in the college. The Helen Corley Petit Professorship is awarded to one faculty member each year at the time of their promotion to associate professor. This distinction, established in 1991, consists of the title, which may be used for the following academic year, and an allowance of $10,000 in unrestricted support for research and teaching.  It is an extraordinary achievement that faculty from the Department of Anthropology have received this award over four consecutive
years:

Demitri B. Shimkin

This award is to be given to a Graduate Student in Anthropology, who has written the outstanding research paper in that year. This award is selected by the committee consisting of three faculty members, one from each subfield. The amount of the award is $1000 -given each year (by Patricia O'Brien, Tauby Shimkin and an anonymous donor) and also a traditional department paperweight.
